The Tibetan Buddhist Teacher, Changling Rinpoche Visits Adelaide, Tuesday 2nd July to Sunday 7th July

Introduction to the Nyingma Lineage
7.30 pm Tuesday 2nd July
Space will be limited, bookings are essential - $20.00 ($10 concession)

The oldest Buddhist tradition of Tibet, the Nyingmapa tradition, was founded in the 8th century by the Tibetan king, Trisongdetsen, the Indian abbot, Shantarakshita, and the great tantric master, Guru Padmasambhava. Under their leadership and guidance the Tibetans accomplished the monumental task of translating hundreds of volumes of the Buddhist scriptures, establishing the monastic tradition of Buddhism, and training innumerable individuals in the tantric Buddhist practices. In Tibet the Nyingmapa tradition was not a centralized body. It was a tradition upheld by lay practitioners as well as ordained clergy. Thousands of Nyingmapa monasteries, libraries, colleges and temples were constructed in Tibet, and its followers counted monks and nuns, lay men and women, yogis and yoginis, householders and hermits. This tradition has continued uninterrupted since the 8th century and present day teachers continue to uphold the Buddha’s teachings and to provide a path and inspiration to those seeking enlightenment.

Development Stage Practice
7.30 pm Wednesday & Thursday, 3rd - 4th July
Theosophical Society, 310 South Terrace Adelaide
$20.00 ($10 concession) per talk or $30.00 ($15 concession) for both evenings

A central theme in tantric Buddhism is taking the entire array of human experience and making it a part of the path to enlightenment. Thus, rather than seeking a realm of quietude, the tantric practitioner regards life as a sacred realm to be fully experienced. To do so properly, without our habitual preconceptions and self-deceptions, requires wisdom on the part of the practitioner, and also the guidance of someone who has already undertaken the journey. Tantric meditation is based on the general Buddhist teachings of shamatha and vipashyana and has the two corresponding sections of development stage and completion stage. Changling Rinpoche will explain the essential aspects of these practices. Prerequisite: Varjayana Empowerment.

Public Talk: Buddhists Views on Truth
Friday 5th July 7.30pm
Theosophical Society, 310 South Terrace, Adelaide - $15.00 ($10 concession)

In Buddhism one finds a wholehearted discussion of what truth is. The notion of truth is always contentious. What is really true, when is it true and for who is it true? The Buddha taught two levels of truth: one being relative truth, which depends on conditions and the other, absolute truth, which is beyond relative conditions. In our everyday lives we abide by conventions which perhaps may not be ultimately true but which serve a function and hold a conventional truth. But when we seek to understand what is real, we need to look beyond conditioning, without attachment to familiar reference points. And then we discover things are not as they appear, and that they are in fact empty of the characteristics we attach to them. These two levels of truth are employed on all levels of practice on the Buddhist path.

Weekend Workshop: The Sadhana of Buddha Shakyamuni
Saturday, 6th & Sunday, 7th July - 10.00 am to 5.00 pm
Mary Mackillop College - $150.00 ($100 concession)

A practice of visualizing the Buddha, this liturgy was composed by the great 18th century lama, Mipham Rinpoche. A visionary, scholar and pre-eminent renaissance man, Mipham Rinpoche wrote this sadhana after encountering the Buddha on a visionary level. This simply yet very profound meditation can be practiced by anyone who wishes to invoke the presence and blessing of the Buddha. The workshop will offer an explanation of the meaning, instructions on how to undertake the practice and actual practice sessions, and thus will provide a clear presentation of both Buddhist theory and practice.
