Master of masters, His Eminence Chogye Trichen Rinpoche, will be visiting Australia in June this year. As he is one of the few living teachers of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, we are extremely privileged to have this opportunity to host his second visit to this country. Not only is His Eminence in his early eighties with difficulties walking, but he is a most dedicated and powerful practitioner, spending most of his days in meditation practice. This makes him a hidden master. He is held in great esteem by the Tibetan Government in Exile and he has been awarded recognition for his Buddhist Dharma work by the King of Nepal, as he is based in Kathmandu Nepal.
To help with the spread of the Dharma after the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1959, His Eminence Chogye Trichen Rinpoche, not only served the Tibetan Government in Exile as Secretary General of Religious and Cultural Affairs for the first five years of exile, but he also established the first Tibetan monastery in Lumbini, Nepal, the birthplace of Shakyamini Buddha. It was in this monastery that a number of Sakyapa monks undertook a traditional three year, three month and three day retreat under his guidance from 1976 onwards, under the sponsorship of His Hiliness the Dalai Lama. One of the graduates of this first retreat was Australia's Lama Choedak. Lama Choedak, one of His Eminence's main disciples , has established many centres - in Hervey Bay, Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne.
His Eminence Chogye Trichen Rinpoche is head of the Tsharpa sub-lineage of the Sakya order of Tibetan Buddhism. He is the 26th Patriarch of Phenpo Nelendra Monastery, founded by Rongton Sheja Kunrig (1367-1449). Born in 1920, His Eminence was recognised by the 13th Dalai Lama as the 18th in the lineage of Chogye Trichens. His Holiness Sakya Trizin, the head of the Sakya lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, is also his disciple and has said of him: "There are many who have attained the wisdom arising from the study of the Scriptures. There are some who have attained the wisdom arising from contemplation of the Dharma. There are few who have gained wisdom arising from meditation. His Eminence Chogye Trichen Rinpoche is one who has attained all three wisdoms. One should consider oneself fortunate just to meet him, which is in itself a great blessing."
He is also revered as a great healer. There are many reports about devotees whose illnesses have been healed by Rinpoche's blessing.
